Turmeric powder, also known as haldi is famous for its fantastic yellow colour, strong flavour and highly distinctive aroma. It has also been deemed the Indian saffron due to its extensive use as an alternative to the far more expensive saffron spice. Turmeric is a significant ingredient in most commercial curry powder. It is used extensively in many Indian dishes, including lentil, vegetable and meat based recipes. In European cuisines, turmeric is sometimes used as a colouring agent.
